Board of Directors

The Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society (LMDSS) is actively seeking candidates for our board of directors. If you live in B.C., have an ardent desire to use your skills and experience to help provide a better life and future for individuals with Down syndrome, and their families, then we would like to hear from you.

Applicants must be willing to commit to serving a two-year volunteer term. Prior board experience, while it is not mandatory, would be an asset. Currently, we have specific needs for directors with experience in finance, non-profit law, family law, social media, grant writing, fundraising, event planning, outreach, and a self-advocate director, but we welcome all applicants and skills to apply.

LMDSS has a strong commitment to our B.C. communities, diversity, inclusion, and support for the families that we serve. As an LMDSS Board Member you will be responsible for ensuring the organization meets their legal requirements and that it is working in accordance with its mission for the purpose for which it was granted a non-profit status.

Members of the board must execute duty and care, attend meetings, be prepared to make informed decisions and be able to request further details if topics deem necessary.

Expectations of Board Members

  • The LMDSS board currently holds an end of the month Tuesday evening virtual meeting with the exception of July, August, and December.
  • The Annual General Meeting takes place in June and requires board member attendance.
  • Board members actively participate on committees of the board during their term.
  • Board members must be knowledgeable of their responsibilities and will fulfil the tasks in a timely manner.
  • Board Members will actively support and connect LMDSS initiatives with their personal networks.
  • Board members should have a basic understanding of Down Syndrome in all stages of life.
